posted in accident, truck |

A tanker truck overturned in Jefferson City, closing both lanes of U.S. 54 and causing nearby schools to evacuate.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says no injuries have been reported as authorities work to clean up the scene and put out fires.

The truck overturned Tuesday on U.S. 54 near Madison and Jefferson streets in Jefferson City.

Witnesses reported seeing a large plume of smoke for miles.

Evacuations were conducted in the immediate area including South School and nearby Trinity Lutheran School.

Police also closed the Jefferson Street overpass crossing the highway because of concern over damage to the structure from the fire.
