FEMA Vows New Effort On Trailers Posing Risk

Friday, July 25th, 2008 |

The federal government pledged Thursday to intensify its efforts to move Gulf Coast hurricane victims out of trailers and into apartments or hotels after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finally confirmed that many trailers were contaminated with high levels of formaldehyde.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which issued about 144,000 trailers to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, has been widely criticized for its slow response to extensive evidence that many trailers contain unsafe levels of formaldehyde, an industrial chemical classified as a probable carcinogen.

About 38,000 families are still living in the trailers and mobile homes, federal officials said Thursday at a news briefing, including more than 7,000 in trailer parks that FEMA had already vowed to close by May, before hurricane season begins again along the Gulf. Most of the other trailers are parked next to flooded houses that families are trying to repair.

FEMA will now hasten to move families living in trailers into apartments or, if necessary, into hotels, said R. David Paulison, the administrator of the agency.

But many details of the new effort remain unclear. For example, the agency has not yet decided whether to force out people who have the trailers parked on their own property. Nor does the agency have a program to help families that have incurred medical bills because of formaldehyde exposure, Mr. Paulison said, adding that the agency would look into that.

Reno considers new truck stop ordinance

Saturday, December 8th, 2007 |

A second hearing specifying where future truck stops should be in Reno tentatively is scheduled before the Reno City Council on Dec. 12.

The council voted 6-0 late Wednesday to approve a first reading of an ordinance defining what truck stops are and where they could be built.

The ordinance would require a minimum of a 10 acres, fewer than 200 truck parking spots and industrial zoning with a special-use permit.

Nearly 50 people spoke to the Council, many from the McQueen-area of northwest Reno.

The ordinance stemmed from their opposition to a Flying J Inc. proposed truck stop on 48-acres south of the Robb Drive interchange at Interstate 80.

Tourists seriously injured in logging truck crash

Saturday, December 8th, 2007 |

Two overseas tourists were airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries after logging truck hit the side of their car in the Karangahake Gorge.

Sergeant Phil Caldwell, of Paeroa police, said shortly after 12pm the car was turning right out of a Tintersection to travel on to SH2 towards Paeroa. A truck and trailer heading towards Waihi had tried to swerve away from the car but had hit it side-on.

The truck smashed through a barrier and stopped on the bank of the Ohinemuri River.

The woman driver of the car was in the more serious condition. Her passenger was also badly injured.

The driver of the Provincial Freightlines truck was also taken to Waikato Hospital.

The three injured people were transported by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance and an Auckland-based helicopter.

Gold and Silver – Prepare to Back Up the Truck!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 |

The pull-back we are seeing in gold and silver is nothing more than some high-volume backing and filling, within the major uptrend.  The annual Christmas rally which started in August has a lot of life in it yet.

The sub-prime mortgage debacle is nowhere near solved, and we can count on the central banks to do what they do with every problem they run into:  print more money.

Nova-Gold just made headlines with news about a problem that most miners are all too aware off:  It’s costing more and more dollars to build a mine.  The majority of exploration companies even if they find gold, never build a mine!  It either costs too much, or it is located in an area that is too remote, or the area is no longer safe.  The number of problems are endless.  I’m confident that Nova-Gold will find a way, in view of the fact that the deposit at Galore Creek is large enough to pursue.  Other companies, with smaller deposits are going to have a hard time bringing their gold to the surface.  There have been no large gold finds for a number of years, and the increase in the amount of gold being produced is getting smaller.

Truck uproots utility poles

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 |

A hit-and-run crash involving an oversize load trailer ripped utility poles from the ground and tore down a fiber-optic cable Tuesday on U.S. 131 in Fabius Township.

According to Michigan State Police in White Pigeon, the incident occurred at Tuesday at the intersection of North Main Street and U.S. 131. Police said an oversize load truck carrying two large, brown containers on a trailer was headed north on U.S. 131 and came in contact with a fiber optic cable that runs across U.S. 131.

Two utility poles were ripped out of the ground and the fiber optic cable was torn down.

The truck continued north and did not stop, police said.

The cable got entangled with a southbound vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was not injured, police said.

Vandals smash postal truck windows

Monday, December 3rd, 2007 |

All day Monday, auto glass workers replaced window after window on postal delivery trucks at the Bluebonnet Station on Braker near Metric.

Investigators say vandals smashed the windshields of 70 to 100 trucks.

Customers who use the postal station were not happy to hear the news.

“I think they’re crazy - why do people want to do stuff like that? That’s crazy - why would anyone want to do that. Its just to get attention,” said Melissa Joe.

And they’re getting attention from postal inspectors. They spent most of Monday looking for clues around the building.

Uganda: Entebbe Airport Gets Fire Fighting Truck

Monday, December 3rd, 2007 |

The civil Aviation Authority has received a fire fighting truck worth $278,000 (about sh489m) ahead of the Commonwealth summit on November 23.

Zeev Shiff, the managing director of Balton, handed over the truck to the aviation authority chief, Ambrose Akandoda, on Wednesday.

According to Akandoda, the truck will supplement the other four in case of a fire outbreak at the airport.

“We had some fire fighting trucks but we had to ensure that we are adequately equipped as part of our preparation for CHOGM.”

He said the trucks have a capacity of 11,000 litres of water and can sprinkle water from a distance of 60 metres. Akandoda challenged the fire fighting team to use the equipment effectively.
