Reno considers new truck stop ordinance

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

A second hearing specifying where future truck stops should be in Reno tentatively is scheduled before the Reno City Council on Dec. 12.

The council voted 6-0 late Wednesday to approve a first reading of an ordinance defining what truck stops are and where they could be built.

The ordinance would require a minimum of a 10 acres, fewer than 200 truck parking spots and industrial zoning with a special-use permit.

Nearly 50 people spoke to the Council, many from the McQueen-area of northwest Reno.

The ordinance stemmed from their opposition to a Flying J Inc. proposed truck stop on 48-acres south of the Robb Drive interchange at Interstate 80.

PORT TRUCK FERRY IDEA IN PLAY, BUT LONG WAY OFF

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Executive Director of the Port of Oswego Jonathan Daniels remains optimistic about the possibility of launching a truck ferry that would run between Oswego and Hamilton, Ont.

There are however a couple of obstacles which must first be overcome in order for this plan to come to fruition.

The idea of bringing a ferry to the port has been tossed around for some time now. It was originally planned that two ferries would make one round trip each day, Monday through Saturday along the 146-mile route from Hamilton to Oswego.

It was estimated that 100 to 120 trailers would be carried and that it would take approximately 12 hours to travel from Hamilton to Oswego.

Tourists seriously injured in logging truck crash

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Two overseas tourists were airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries after logging truck hit the side of their car in the Karangahake Gorge.

Sergeant Phil Caldwell, of Paeroa police, said shortly after 12pm the car was turning right out of a Tintersection to travel on to SH2 towards Paeroa. A truck and trailer heading towards Waihi had tried to swerve away from the car but had hit it side-on.

The truck smashed through a barrier and stopped on the bank of the Ohinemuri River.

The woman driver of the car was in the more serious condition. Her passenger was also badly injured.

The driver of the Provincial Freightlines truck was also taken to Waikato Hospital.

The three injured people were transported by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance and an Auckland-based helicopter.

SV Fire District signs deal for Santa Cruz ladder truck

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Expecting construction of more multistory buildings, the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District has worked out a deal to bring an aerial ladder truck from Santa Cruz on initial fire response when needed.

The Scotts Valley district’s 27-year-old Van Pelt Telesquirt has only a 55-foot ladder, too short for use above three stories.

It would cost more than $600,000 to replace it with a 100-foot-ladder truck, fire Chief Mike McMurry reported to district directors, and the truck wouldn’t be needed very often.

As an alternative, directors agreed on an arrangement under, which Santa Cruz will provide a ladder truck in exchange for Scotts Valley responding to Santa Cruz wildland fires with a wildland engine and water tender.

Alleged truck-scam victim testifies in Huling Bros. trial

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

A mentally ill man who was allegedly scammed out of a $30,000 pickup by a former Huling Brothers Auto Center employee testified Wednesday he knew what he was doing when he signed over the truck, but believed he would eventually get it back.

After being admitted to a psychiatric ward, the man signed over the truck he had recently bought from Huling Brothers to salesman Paul Rimbey in a contract that gave ownership of the truck to Rimbey if the man couldn’t repay about $1,200 in impound fees.

In testimony that often wandered off the subject, the man said he knew he might lose the truck if he couldn’t pay the impound costs and fees within 30 days.

Prosecutors allege Rimbey scammed the man out of the pickup, taking advantage of his mental state.

Gold and Silver – Prepare to Back Up the Truck!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

The pull-back we are seeing in gold and silver is nothing more than some high-volume backing and filling, within the major uptrend.  The annual Christmas rally which started in August has a lot of life in it yet.

The sub-prime mortgage debacle is nowhere near solved, and we can count on the central banks to do what they do with every problem they run into:  print more money.

Nova-Gold just made headlines with news about a problem that most miners are all too aware off:  It’s costing more and more dollars to build a mine.  The majority of exploration companies even if they find gold, never build a mine!  It either costs too much, or it is located in an area that is too remote, or the area is no longer safe.  The number of problems are endless.  I’m confident that Nova-Gold will find a way, in view of the fact that the deposit at Galore Creek is large enough to pursue.  Other companies, with smaller deposits are going to have a hard time bringing their gold to the surface.  There have been no large gold finds for a number of years, and the increase in the amount of gold being produced is getting smaller.
